Sid

I was born on Christmas day and when I was still quite young I wanted to see the world, so one morning I waited until Mum and Dad had gone to work and went off by myself.  I ran out the gate and up the street. I barked at the neighbour's cat and  sniffed lots of lovely smells along the grass verge.  I decided to see what exciting things were on the other side of the road. I started to cross the road when suddenly a car roared around the corner and bowled me off my feet.  OUCH!  I staggered to the side of the road, my heart pounding.  My whole body hurt and I was so scared. Home seemed far, far away and I wanted my Mum and Dad.

I was in so much pain and it was getting dark when a car with "SPCA" on it stopped. A lady got out and put me in the back of her truck. She looked worried so I tried to wag my tail to cheer them up. She took me to a vet who found my microchip and said that my Mum and Dad were coming to see me. When my Mum and Dad arrived they all talked for awhile.  Mum patted me and then started crying.  I thought I was going home but Mum said I would have to go to heaven instead.

I couldn't understand what was happening. Where was heaven?  Why were they crying? What was money? Why couldn’t I go home?  Mum signed a piece of paper then her and Dad left.  The door closed and I was left with the two ladies.

My leg was badly dislocated and I needed an operation to cut the end off the leg bone.  It was going to cost a lot of money.  The SPCA lady put my picture in the paper.  Lots of people read about me and they cared so much that they brought in money for my operation; I felt very honoured.  After I had my operation and had to learn to use my leg again I stayed with the SPCA lady and every day a wonderful woman named Micheline came to visit me and take me lots of nice places like the beach.

Six months went by and it was now Christmas and my first birthday.  It was a very special birthday because I got a new Mum! Now I live with Micheline and I run and swim every day with my step brothers Russell and Bear.  I play games with the cats Roger and Max and snuggle on the couch with Leigh. This must be better than that place called heaven. I am very, very lucky that all of those people helped me out.

Because so many people gave so generously, there was money left over which I didn’t need after all.  We put it in to a special fund so the SPCA can help other injured animals.  It is called the “S.I.D.” fund.  That stands for “Save Injured Dogs” – but we can use it for cats and other animals too. If you would like to donate to the S.I.D. fund, you would be enabling the SPCA to rescue animals who need surgery – otherwise they might go to heaven like I nearly did. Thanks for your support... Sid xx
